Lanuv said that no information could be given about the age and sex of the second animal. A second wolf has not yet been genetically detected in the Schermbeck wolf area. A Lanuv spokesman justified the assumption that two females would not be together in principle that the second animal is male.

Wolves live according to the information in fixed pairs, which are usually lifelong. According to the nationally agreed monitoring standard, a pair can be assumed if two sexually mature wolves – male and female – are detected together in a territory for at least four weeks.

Until the end of December, she-wolf Gloria had repeatedly attracted attention through cracks in livestock. A shepherd had asked for the animal to be shot in vain. After the last recorded crack in December, the she-wolf remained inconspicuous. According to Lanuv, the red deer, harassed by the wolves before Easter, defended itself against the wolves and fled slightly injured.

From Düsseldorf a man supplies the world with opium and other hard drugs. Its partners are based in America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Imprisonment is part of the business.

Düsseldorf, near the train station: N. leads a contemplative, simple life. The 63-year-old moves into Hartz IV and has been a political refugee in Germany since 1985. He doesn’t indulge in luxury in public, doesn’t own a villa, just 50 square meters in an apartment building. Outwardly there are hardly any signs of the German-Iranian’s business: As the head of an international drug ring, he was in prison for eight years – and according to investigators, he is said to have started building a global syndicate again shortly afterwards. His business: opium. Cocaine. Crystal meth.

The homepage of the import-export company registered for his son provides a vague reference to this:

“The ear to the pulse of world trade … Whether on the road, by rail, on the water or in the air … Talk to us – we will bring your goods to their destination or pick them up from wherever you want , here. ” 

That is at least ambiguous. Investigators are convinced: while his son’s business forms the legal backdrop, 15 years after his first arrest, N. is back in the drug business. When they stormed 30 apartments and business premises in Düsseldorf and Wuppertal, in Pulheim, Mettmann and Remscheid with special forces in mid-March, the handcuffs clicked on him too. The investigators found 71 kilograms of hard drugs, plus 400,000 euros in cash. Peanuts in the smuggling business. Fifteen years ago, in a first trial against N., investigators found almost four times as much opium. N. and his accomplices went to jail for years.

But the drug network seems to be resilient and flexible: From Düsseldorf on the Rhine, it will continue to stretch in 2018 to Afghanistan and Iran, the USA and Canada, Australia and Japan. It is one of the largest criminal cases in the Federal Republic – and hardly attracts any attention. It’s a multi-million dollar business.

Afghanistan has been the world’s largest producer of opium and heroin for decades. But in 2003 the ground there will probably be “too hot” for the Düsseldorf smugglers for a short time, German investigators suspect. A large shipment needs to be shipped out of the country quickly. After the attacks on the New York World Trade Center, the West ended the rule of the Islamist Taliban – but the war on terror is far from over, and the country is far from being stabilized. In many regions, warlords, Taliban and NATO forces are fighting for dominance. Expensive goods can quickly be in danger – depending on who has the upper hand and with whom you have previously allied.

The network to Germany is already in place at this point, and there are potential delivery routes via Iran. Large deliveries are usually made by truck via the Balkans to Germany. There, almost 25,000 vehicles pass through the Suben border crossing on the A3 every day. With great logistical effort, only about 100 of them can be checked daily. Presumably the big delivery to Düsseldorf also takes this route – like others before and after.

“Inconspicuous” is how the authorities describe the men who, at the beginning of the noughties, earned their living by smuggling drugs in Düsseldorf and in the Bergisches Land. The Iranians and Italians are pizza makers, taxi drivers, shop detectives. N. runs a shop with oriental carpets. The actual business, however, is raw opium, specifically: international trade in it. The contacts extend to Scandinavia, Great Britain – and the USA.

The dried juice of the poppy seed capsules can be processed into heroin in temporary laboratories with little effort. The profit margins are gigantic. A kilo of raw opium changes hands in Afghanistan at this time for a maximum of 200 dollars – one kilo of heroin is worth almost 45,000 dollars.

Düsseldorf is the hub for global trade. In N.’s apartment, accomplices turn the opium through the meat grinder before pressing it into plates and packing it in suitcases. A false floor is supposed to protect the drugs from detection – because the suitcases have to go through airport controls and customs. Your destination: the US state of California. There is N.’s contact person for the deals. Between 2001 and 2003 alone, he flies there 13 times. His accomplices also keep going. Always in your luggage: raw opium worth millions.

In April 2002, N. took eleven suitcases with him on the trip – unknowingly accompanied by an informant from the US anti-drug agency DEA. Because both in Los Angeles and in Germany, the authorities are already on the trail of the ring.

The Iranian businessman L. lives in the Golden State on the US west coast – the prosecution will later call him the “boss of the bosses”. N. and his couriers bring the opium to him. Whoever pulls the strings in the end, has the say between the two partners – there is apparently not necessarily a consensus in German and US police circles. It’s probably a give and take.

On the outside, L. is a successful Iranian entrepreneur, his jewelry store in downtown Los Angeles is directly across from Bank of America. He is already wanted in the state of Arizona for alleged possession of opium. The investigators suspect that he organizes the drug smuggling from his place of residence, the California surfer’s paradise Santa Monica.

The opium is distributed to mid-level dealers. The proceeds from the sale allegedly flow into real estate, real estate and homes, luxury cars and several limited liability companies. Pictures of the drug investigators show a white Mercedes CLS and a black SUV, model: Cadillac Escalade. More money should leave the country on winding roads. Where to is still unclear. 

According to US investigators, N. also organizes his finances from California. He pays large sums of money into American banks, which are transferred to his accounts in Germany and Switzerland. From there, parts of it flow into Iran. To whom exactly? This is also not known to this day.

Over 15 years later, however, German investigators from the State Criminal Police Office in North Rhine-Westphalia will find that the political refugee from Iran keeps traveling back there, even maintaining bank accounts there. “That raises questions,” they say. Isn’t he in danger there?

In 2003, shortly before the police strike for the first time, N. and his gang had more information than they should have. The Italians with whom the Iranian network works in Germany have offered undercover investigators 100 kilos of raw opium. After several test purchases of smaller quantities, they plan to access them. Because the Italians get wind of the matter, the investigators prefer the raid. 200 police officers move against the drug ring together with US investigators, arrest seven people and confiscate over 270 kilograms of raw opium.

The temporary end of smuggling? Nothing.

Admittedly, not only N. is sentenced to a long prison term after a trial under the highest security precautions, but also his accomplices – the warehouse clerk, the couriers, the helpers. But even after the arrests, the Connection in L.A. received further deliveries. Organized by N. from prison, investigators believe in the US. However, they cannot prove it. 

Only when the US ring was dug up by police officers two years later and the “boss of the bosses” went to jail for four years did the network seem to have come to an end.

But that is also a fallacy. In March 2018, a few years after his release, international investigators hit N. again. The suspicion: drug smuggling. The trail leads again to other continents: this time not only to Los Angeles on the US west coast, but also to Canada, South American Ecuador, Asia and Down Under. Investigators suspect a “worldwide syndicate”. The Iranian network seems intact as ever.

In Australia, shortly before the raid in Germany, the authorities quickly noticed some German tourists: They are nervous, with an obviously guilty conscience. The couple from Dormagen do not seem quite at ease as they pass the controls at the airport. No wonder.

In their professionally prepared wheeled suitcases there are one to two kilograms of cocaine each. The ring has not only expanded its range of goods, it also seems to have learned: According to the police, N. and his accomplices no longer travel in person. Instead, couriers who have hitherto been innocent but are chronically clumsy and indebted are hired in discos and pizzerias and rewarded with a “free vacation”.

It could end up costing them dearly – six of them go online to the police, another 14 are under investigation. In Australia, such offenses are imprisoned for up to 25 years. But by no means all are picked up. A total of at least five million euros in drug money are to flow back to their clients in Germany.

The masterminds also don’t just send couriers with suitcases. Postal parcels with children’s clothing and stuffed animals are on their way. The biggest coup: an industrial furnace specially converted in Bochum – filled with 50 kilos of cocaine.
