If you don’t care about the water quality, you run the risk of getting sick

However, only chlorine helps against algae, the content of which in the water must be regularly adjusted. To do this, the pool must be cleaned regularly and the pumps cleaned and serviced. In winter, the water is drained, including a general overhaul.

All this also applies to the classic pool, which is dug into the meadow. The pools and accessories are often the same as for the above ground pool, but first the soil is excavated with the excavator and transported away by truck, and the edges and the base are poured from concrete. Then the pool made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) is embedded, fixed by the pool builder, the technology integrated and connected. For this purpose, the edges are attached and tiled all around. That quickly costs several thousand euros, depending on the size.

Swimming pond without chemicals

“” A pool would be too boring for me. It looks like the municipal swimming pool, but I can only swim three or four times at most, ”says Wolfram Franke skeptically. The former editor-in-chief of the gardening magazine “” Kraut Beet “” has been concerned with bathing ponds since the 1980s and has written several advice books about them. His title “Swimming ponds – planning, system, technology, planting, care” was published a few weeks ago in a completely revised new edition by BLV-Verlag. Sure, he created an eight by eight meter pond in his garden himself – with little help from a pond builder.

Blooming water lilies

Specially set plants that need the nutrients of the algae to grow grow in the shallow water of the created bank areas. The resulting bacteria further reduce their nutrition. The water is constantly moving to the edges and back due to the bathers, the wind and submerged birds. “” Algae are caused by heat and a high nutrient content in the water. The plants prevent them. This means that no technology, no chemicals and no electricity are required. “” In addition, it is wonderful to look at blooming water lilies and other plants. “” That totally relaxes me, “says Wolfram Franke. In addition, the aquatic plants would merge the pool and garden into one unit – no right angles, no concrete.

Swimming pond: construction takes several weeks

However, it takes a few weeks after creation for the biological equilibrium between the water and the plants to be established. Unlike in the pool, the water stays in in winter and is only protected against autumn leaves with a net. Franke recommends using rain or ground water to fill the pond or pool. “” Rainwater that is collected in tons is best; it is allowed to settle for a few days. It’s lime-free, wonderful, “” he recommends. Groundwater can also be filled in instead of expensive water from the tap. However, you should have it checked for pollutants beforehand – especially if you live in agricultural regions. “” The nitrate levels can be drastically excessive. “”

It is essential to pay attention to regulations on building permits

If the pool or pond does not exceed 100 cubic meters, it can be built in Germany without a building permit. This corresponds roughly to a pool with a size of five by twelve meters and a depth of 1.50 meters. But be careful: Depending on the state and municipality, the details can be different. It is therefore important to check with your local building authority before starting construction.to kill a mockingbird essay thesis

What does the insurance cover?

A call to the insurance company also makes sense, because the pool must be included in the building insurance. Here it comes down to the details: Does it pay if the pumps and filters are rendered unusable by the mud of a storm? Oh yes: A fence at least 1.20 meters high around the garden is also necessary to secure yourself. Because even if children come onto the property without permission and have an accident in the pool when the homeowner is absent, the owner is liable. Therefore, the following applies to pool builders: First plan down to the last detail, then jump in and relax.

Pools in your own garden are becoming increasingly popular – also thanks to cheap offers on the Internet and hardware stores. But bathing fun can involve risks.

The sun is shining, everyone is sweating: How nice would it be to cool off, a pool in your own garden! What used to be luxury is now affordable for many people thanks to cheap offers. For sometimes less than 100 euros, you can get models of considerable size on the Internet. But bathing fun at home harbors health risks, as experts describe.

Puddle germs, salmonella: bacteria in bath water

“Microbiologically, bath water must be of almost drinking water quality,” says Dirk Bockmühl. As a professor of hygiene and microbiology at the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kleve and the author of the book “Keim daheim” “, he knows the risks of private pools: Bacteria enter the pool water naturally through the environment and through humans and could quickly become a hazard will. You don’t necessarily see that in the water, according to the expert, even apparently clean water can be polluted.

“” Environmental germs are really everywhere. In pools they can find framework conditions where they feel comfortable, “” explains Bockmühl. It is about E. coli bacteria, even salmonella have already been detected in the pool water. Pseudomonads, so-called puddle germs, could also get into the local water basin via drops. The newspaper “Die Welt” recently reported on this. In terms of health, however, pseudomonads are particularly dangerous for the immunocompromised, as they can cause severe infections.

Faecal germs can survive particularly long in water

In water, pathogens use organic material such as tree leaves as food. Some bacteria such as faecal germs could survive particularly long in water, says Bockmühl. A well-known disgusting factor in water – urine – is according to him, however, harmless from a microbiological point of view, since it is sterile in healthy people. But it also serves as a nutrient for the bacteria.

It becomes particularly problematic when pools are filled with water for a long time in the garden, explains Bockmühl. A high germ density could arise here. This could be particularly dangerous to children, pregnant women, senior citizens and immunocompromised people. From a certain pool size, it is therefore important to equip pools with filters or even to treat them with chlorine. If you don’t care about the water quality, you run the risk of getting sick.

This is confirmed by the Düsseldorf pediatrician Hermann Josef Kahl, who deals with the subject: “” People who have private pools have to make sure that they are clean. “” Faecal germs can quickly cause diarrhea if water is swallowed. And if you go swimming with open wounds, you risk infections.

“” We have a hygiene problem in Germany “”

However, it is difficult to tell whether patients’ illnesses are directly related to bathing, says Kahl, who is also spokesman for the professional association of paediatricians (BVKJ). Nevertheless, the doctor sees a clear trend: “” We have a hygiene problem in Germany. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that parents underestimate the issue, often it is convenience. “” On the other hand, many working parents are exposed to such time pressure that their children’s hygiene suffers.

However, several factors play a role in infections, adds Bockmühl: “” The presence of a microorganism alone is not enough to cause an infection, “” explains the biologist. In addition, the germ dose, the immune status of the bathers and the route of infection are also decisive.

Strict hygiene rules apply to outdoor pools

While everyone is responsible for their own pool at home, strict rules apply to public pools. Here the health department controls according to the bath hygiene regulation. Every year there are routine examinations, says Matthias Oloew, spokesman for the Berlin pool operations. Without the green light from the laboratory, outdoor swimming pools should not open.

Such requirements do not apply at home. But pool owners should watch out for a few things, given the potential risks. Those who chlorinate the water should strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions, says Bockmühl. He thinks too much, but also too little, chlorine is bad. Bockmühl advises against chemical treatment for children’s paddling pools: “” Chlorine tablets are completely nonsensical here. “” Instead, the water can be exchanged every day and used for watering flowers, for example.

The deepest pool in the world is to be built in Poland. Near the capital Warsaw, excavators are already creating space for a mega-basin that is supposed to reach 45 meters deep into the abyss. “” Of course our pool is the deepest in the world “, said manager Bartosz Wiecek of the Flyspot company, which invests in the diving paradise for beginners and professionals. With a capacity of 8,000 cubic meters, the pool will also be the largest in the world, according to the company.
